The Infernot: UNESCO World Heritage Cellars
The Infernot are small underground cellars carved into the local “pietra da cantoni,” a typical calcareous sandstone, once used to store the wines of noble families in the region.
Their origins date back to the 16th century, when the patrician families of Monferrato began excavating underground spaces to preserve their wines in ideal temperature and humidity conditions. Each Infernot was often adorned with niches, shelves, and vaulted ceilings, creating not only a functional space but also an artistic one.
Today, they represent a true cultural and historical treasure, part of the UNESCO site “Vineyard Landscapes of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato.”
Among the most accessible are the Infernot degli Angeli, located beneath the Town Hall of Fubine, which have been carefully restored and now offer a unique experience that blends history and wine culture.
